Timothy Marc – Secret Society Mastermind 2015 (Open)
3 Years in the Secret Society Mastermind
Last year I wrote a post about this group called the Secret Society Mastermind and how I got in, but in the last year so many things have happened that I think is just fair to talk about this again, especially since it’s about to open one more time, and many people look for me asking “Is this worth it?”, so this article will be about my experience in the group, and how it has influenced my life during the last 3 years.
I think the group will be opening in between August 15th to 20th, which is kind of funny since in August 15th I will be celebrating my 2 year anniversary of freedom. That was the day where I left my day job and been living without a “job” since then. It’s not been easy, and sometimes shit has happened for me but it’s only natural since the position I started in. However even the most horrible difficulties now seem much brighter in comparison to the depression I had in the cubicle, fears have been faced, troubles have been slain, and I’m happier than ever working towards a much larger goal.
I’ve been known in the group and for the people following the blog because of my story, and there’s always people adding me on Facebook just to ask me questions about the program. So, 3 years after joining I got some knowledge in what’s the most common doubts that people have about this.
1.- Is it really worth it?
Hell Yes! The program is really expensive, and the reason why Tim chooses to give this program so expensive and in so short notice is to avoid the people who don’t take action. He only wants the best of the best in there, and the people who take the decisions. There’s another reason as well, people value knowledge according to price, and we as humans are stupid that way. After 3 years, I have giving amazing content to hundreds of people and they barely take any action. Hell, I’ve seen people paying between $2K and $10K for some programs and never taking action with them! But at least the percentage of people taking massive action after paying a huge amount of money is bigger. That will put some psychological pressure on your mind to do what you need to do.
2.- Is it a scam?
No is not, in fact, after you pay you will have a period of 6 weeks money back guarantee and I have seen people asking for it and receive it in the same day. The name is just good marketing as Ramit’s book “I will Teach you to be Rich” or Tim Ferriss’s “The 4 Hour Work Week”, sure, they sound like scam, but it’s only to grab the attention of the people, but if you have been into entrepreneurship for a while you know that Ramit Sethi delivers amazing knowledge and Tim Ferriss is one damn genius.
I get it, paying $3K in internet to some guy you have never met to teach you how to do a “Freedom Business” that will allow you to make money on the internet sounds like a scam, and even though I knew Tim since the days of Real Social Dynamics and I knew that he was the real deal, I spent the last 3 days before the opening not being able to sleep because of the fear and excitement about joining. You probably are reading this from a first world country, imagine me, in a third world country, with a salary of $600 per month, about to pay half a year of work with debt money. Not the best scenario.
It was the scariest decision in my whole life, but it was the best.
3.- Is it a Multi-Level Marketing product (Pyramid Scheme)
Hell no, I hate MLM. Imagine this scenario. You want to play the piano, you know nothing about playing the piano. So you hire a mentor to teach you, the guy teaches you the basics and everything you need to know so you learn to play, imagine that you learn and you get amazing success with it and that you’re giving live performances for big audiences. Do you have to pay your mentor for every show that you give? No, you already paid the instructor. What type of music will you be playing? It’s up to you. So the same way happens with SSM.
You’re paying to have a very detailed guidance on building your own business. Every year, 200+ members all over the world join SSM and every week you’ll have a video showing you the steps to do that week, and at the same time you’ll have the feedback of those 200+ people all around the world doing the same step as you do. So the knowledge you get by looking what’s working and what’s not working with all the other guys is amazing.
What type of business will you be building? The most common because it’s easy to start with those are website or video businesses. However those are the hardest to scale. There are many types of businesses in SSM, from Vehicle Wraps, to iPhone cases for cyclists, to apps development and ecommerce. It depends on what you found that would work for you in the validation step, which you will be seeing in the first weeks.
That’s right, first you decide which type of people you want your clients to be, then you will be contacting them, finding what they need and validating your idea before you start creating something. Why? Because we don’t want you spending 3 months building a business that won’t sell shit. So what you do will be 100% up to you.
You pay, you get the knowledge, you get access to the community and make amazing friends that will push you towards your dream, and you don’t have to pay anything else ever again, just push yourself to grow your business. And to be honest, the knowledge you’ll be getting from the people inside that you meet for the rest of your life and those friendships are worth much more than that.
4.- Have businesses failed in SSM?
Yes, there have been many ideas that failed but when that happened, people just build another idea that works and that’s it. I created 4 ideas before Epic Web Studio and the 4 of them failed, never gave a single dollar. And even in Epic Web Studio there have been problems. A while ago I wrote a post about being broke when 6 clients disappeared on me and didn’t paid. And 2 weeks later I got a new client and everything was good.
The truth is that entrepreneurship is hard, and your success or failure depends a lot on what you do or don’t do. For example, many people have skipped the validation part in SSM, when everybody told them not to do so. Why? Because they were scared to talk to the ideal customers to find out what they needed, they just created a business without validating it just to find that nobody wanted to buy, or even worse, not knowing who their ideal client was. I’ll let Noah Kagan explain why this is so bad:
I have also seen people paying and never doing anything with the content. But I also have seen people in India, Vietnam, Mexico, and very hard places to start a business have an amazing success. So it’s up to you.
How I Started in SSM?
For those who have been following me for a while you know the story, for those who don’t it goes a little bit like this:
I live in El Salvador, the smallest and most violent country in the world. The Daily Mail in UK called us “The Murder Capital”, so as you can imagine opportunities and jobs here are not the best. $700 a month is considered a “damn awesome salary” by a huge majority, and low life standards are the norm for almost everyone.
In top of that I was raised in a very dysfunctional family with a father who had decided to made my life miserable just to teach me that “life is hard” for the last 15 years of my life. Thanks to that I grew a huge drive when it came to the professional life in order to get away from my family as soon as possible and live a good life. Thanks to that in just 5 years I was able to reach the top of my career in IT working for the best IT Company in the country, a place where I was able to see the best jobs that the country had to offer and I was not impressed.
5 Years of hustle just to have a bitter taste on my mouth thinking: “Is this it?” And then changing jobs to an easier position in one of the 2 biggest newspapers companies in my country. Now this last job was not a “day job of doom”, it was pretty relaxed, I earned $600 per month (again, for many people here that’s “a lot”) but I still had this big life that I wanted to live but combined with the knowledge that this life was not possible with the jobs here made me sad.
I remember in the first days of working in the newspaper I went for a little bit of water and saw there in a board an anniversary sheet, with the names of the people that had been working there for 20, 25, 35 years in positions that were obvious that hadn’t changed probably in all their life working there. I felt Goosebumps, how the fuck people can live like that? I couldn’t imagine myself doing that, and I returned to my cubicle thinking that there was something wrong with me, after all, everybody else seemed so happy.
After some months in that job I started to think that I was the “damaged one” and “settled in”, and started to fell into depression, which grew more and more and that lasted 3 months until I saw one little video.
Enter Timothy Marc:
For those who don’t know Tim is the founder of Freedom Business Blog and Freedom Studios. He have helped many people during 7 years on improving their social skills and now he has 5 years helping people building freedom businesses that fund the life they love while traveling the world and having amazing adventures, he pretty much has become a James Bond with a Laptop working for brands like Envato, Nike and many more.
I followed Tim since the days of Real Social Dynamics and I knew he was the real deal, some months ago I had joined an email list of his, called “Do Something Rad”, he was talking about something on business but this time he showed a video talking about the idea of freedom business. This was a completely new concept for me and he talked about the book The Four Hour Work Week which I looked as soon as possible and read it in one week. I was blown away, I was angry for me at the beginning for giving up on the life I wanted but know I knew the path I had to take.
He opened the first group in October 2011, which I failed to join because my credit card expired the same day he opened. I went running to the bank to pass the money to a friend of mine so he could make the purchase for me, but when I did, the course was closed, SSM was full.
I was so sad at the beginning, however I knew now that this existed and that I wasn’t going to give up. I started learning on my own and even won a scholarship for life in Digital Nomad Academy.
And 3 months later, SSM2 was opening again, I was not missing this one, but this time the price was bigger, it wasn’t $1K anymore, it was $2k…. holy shit! $2K was a lot for me and I only had $1K. That was pretty much 6 months of salary! Well! Fuck it! I went to the bank and got myself into even more debt, something Tim told me NOT TO DO. However I knew that it was now or never. The last 3 days before joining were making me crazy, I couldn’t sleep, I was all zombified and worried in work, but after I joined, I was happy, I knew my life would change after that, I just didn’t imagined how much.
I created Epic Web Studio, and gave for free my first 4 projects just to gain testimonials and portfolio (totally unnecessary but I was so insecure at the time), and then it came, the first 2 clients that made me $1K in a week! A WEEK! For me it was crazy, I never made more than $700 a month and I just made $1K a week! It was crazy, I was about to invest it and all but Tim told me to enjoy myself and that moment, so I took that money, went to the beach with some friends and got really drunk there.
Coming back I knew that life just turned for the better. And that many good things were about to happen soon. It took me a little bit more than 1 year to be able to leave my work on August 15th on 2013. But again, I was heavily in debt, with many issues socializing, many insecurities and in a country that barely has opportunities let alone money, but ever since leaving my job I haven’t looked back.
3 Years after joining
Imagine how I was after making $1K a week, imagine how I felt after making $3,500 in 1 day. After leaving my job and being able to fully concentrate on my business I’ve been able to work with more than 18 countries all over the world, I’ve given speeches in my country about entrepreneurship, I appeared in local newspapers and TV. I’ve been interviewed by other people in the US, I’ve won an scholarship in B-School from Marie Forleo. I’ve been broke after some bad clients took advantage on me and then got money in less than 2 weeks by looking for new clients. I’ve given a speech in Campus Party which was the biggest tech event in my country and had amazing parties with the entrepreneurs in my country.
You can see many of those in the Mentions section of this page.
We’re working now on creating an animated series (which would be the first one created in Central America I think) and won a $30K prize with it. Also we have gotten the help of big guys in the animation industry like Stephen Silver, a Character Developer on Disney, Robert Kondo, the Art Director of Ratatouille and Toy Story 3. Bobby Chiu, who created characters for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Men in Black 3, and Fred Seibert who’s the CEO of Frederator, he’s responsible of creating the 90’s cartoons on Cartoon Network, The Fairly Odd parents and Adventure Time and we have many more interviews to come. And Now I’m competing to win a $75K prize for film (I can’t show anything yet or I’ll lose by default)
Right after my speech in Campus Party I was called by Bobbe to chat about life, just to find out that it was a surprise from Tim, giving me the trip to Bulgaria, to have one of the most mind-blowing experiences in my whole life and having a damn awesome adventure
As I’m writing to you I just got an email from a tech university in my country who wants to do a 30 min interview for a tech magazine on entrepreneurship. I’m guiding 4 groups for their business model for a competition in animation, film and videogames. I’m waiting for summer vacations in my country for my friends to be free for a week from their jobs and enjoy with them (Sad part about being free is that nobody else is) I’m waking up at 5am to get up and go running to avoid the horrible sun from my country and get more energy for the day. I’ve joined The Habit Sheet Experiment to ground the habits that I want to integrate in my life and I’m planning everything to finally get out of this country for good and start traveling, the only thing that’s stopping me now in this country it’s the $75K prize that I want to get.
I have met many amazing entrepreneurs in my country and also all over the world. I can get rid of people that don’t bring anything good actively to my life because I have many amazing people supporting me that I don’t want to bring anything less than that. I can go out any time I want, I can see the friends that are important to me any time I want and life is good.
Questions you might have
I will be asking any questions that you might have for SSM. You can contact me using this form. Also if you’re not in a position to pay for SSM I’ve created a Free 7 day bootcamp that you can join on making $1K without spending any money at all, you can join it here.
3 Day Bootcamp
I highly recommend that you join Tim’s 3 Free 3 Day Online Bootcamp on How To Build A Business That Funds A Life Of Freedom, Fun And Adventure.
With this you will have a much better idea of what to expect from SSM.
And remember, people from third world countries are doing this and having a damn good time with it, if you’re in a first or second world country, you don’t have ANY excuse.
Other Members in SSM
During the last year I started a podcast interviewing many amazing people, many of them are SSM members, if you want to know more about their experience I’ll leave the interviews below so you can watch them. Each one last between 30-45 min so take it slowly.
